ABOUT THE MASTERCLASS

The ‘Lie Analysis’ Masterclass is a training course that has been specifically designed and researched in order to allow participants to significantly develop their own personal analysis skills. By developing a more highly aware approach to social interactions, attendees will be able to considerably improve their own abilities to interpret and understand people’s personalities and behaviour at a much more granular level.

Although learning and developing these types of skills takes time and practice, it is a highly worthwhile personal investment, as it will not only allow attendees to better protect their own interests, but it will allow attendees to become better judges of personality and character in the long term. The training course is highly suitable for both attendees who wish to attend the training course for a specific purpose (e.g. becoming better at understanding body language, deceit signals, and lies in dating or personal relationships, or to be better at understanding personal motivations and behaviour within work colleagues), or those who wish to develop their analysis and behavioural lie analysis skills more generally.

The Masterclass is highly unique in that it has been developed in order to blend academic theory with practical knowledge, understanding, and application, in order to make it highly accessible to the Masterclass attendees. By breaking down theories in an easy to understand fashion, the Expert Trainer will allow attendees to clearly understand how to put all theories and research findings into practice within their own lives. In addition to this, the Masterclass sessions include a range of case studies throughout that exemplify how observations and findings could be put to use, or could be incorporated in the daily and social lives of the Masterclass attendees.

This highly practical approach to lie analysis is absolutely essential in order to allow the attendees to truly develop their practical analysis skills following on from the Behavioural Lie Analysis Masterclass. In addition to academic theory, the Masterclass incorporates coverage of the latest research and technology developments in the field of lie analysis. For example, it will cover the technological approach to lying and facial clues (Lip Biting; Micro-Expressions; Frequent Swallowing; Slips of the Tongue; Joint/Merged Expressions; Asymmetry in the Face; Duration of the Expression; Dilated Pupils; Fewer Facial Movements; Blink Rate) developed by Ugail, Yap, and Rajoub (2011). DAY 1

SESSION 1: The Theoretics of Lying

• The Prefrontal Cortex; the Frontal Parietal Control Network; Brain Processing Power; an Introduction to Deontic Reasoning; the Theory of the Mind; and the Response Inhibition and Suppression of the Truth; Social Norms and Truth Telling; Emotional Triggers and Lies; Ethical Norms and Attributes.

• Lie Typologies (White Lies; Real Lies; Gray Lies); Distinguishing Lies from the Truth (Burgoon et al., 1994; DePaulo, and Morris, 2004; Bond and DePaulo, 2006); Honesty Experiments; Computer Voice-Stress Analysis; Lie-Detector (Polygaph) Tests; the Guilty Knowledge Test; Predicting Deception from Linguistic Predictors and Styles (Newman et al., 2003).

• Lie Detection and the Measurement of Physiological Correlates; General Emotional and Physiological Responses; the Detection of Lies and the Influence of a Shared History (DeBernardis et al., 2014).

• Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Patterns of Neural Activity (Greene and Paxton, 2009); fMRI Lie Detection; Cephos; No Lie MRI; Modern Lie Detection Uses (“risk reduction in dating,” “trust issues in interpersonal relationships,” and “issues concerning the underlying topics of sex, power, and money”).

SESSION 2: Body Language - Evaluation and Deceit Signals

• Body Language and the Observation of Micro-Gestures (e.g. Sweating; Flushed Cheeks; Eye- Blinking; Facial Muscular Twitching; Pupil Dilation and Contraction (Pease and Pease, 2005)) and Gesture Clusters; Establishing a Baseline.

• Common Lying Gestures (Mouth Cover; Nose Touch; Itchy Nose; Eye Rub; Ear Grab; Neck Scratch; Collar Pull; Fingers-in-the-Mouth) (Pease and Pease, 2005).

• Deceptive Practices and Red Flags (Fragmented Speech; Vagueness; Repetition; Specificity of Details; Grooming Behaviours; Hesitation; Diversion Tactics; Qualifying Words; Swear Oathing).

SESSION 3: Lies, Body Language, and Nonverbal Communication

• Nonverbals (Feet and Legs): Feet Signs; Directional Shifts; Knee Clasp; Leg Splay; Comfort Displays; Courtship Displays; Changes in Intensity and Movement; Foot Freezes.

• Nonverbals (Torso, Hips, Chest, and Shoulders): Ventral Denial and Fronting; Torso Shield; Torso Bow; Torso Embellishments; Torso Splays; Breathing Behaviour; Shoulder Displays.

• Nonverbals (Arms, Hands and Fingers): Arm Withdrawal; Arm Restriction; Arm Cues; Territorial Displays; Power Displays; Courtship and Affection Displays; Hands and Impressions; Preening and Hands; Hands and Nonverbal Signals; Frozen Hands; Hand-Wringing; Rubbing of Hands; Neck Touching.

SESSION 4: Lies, Emotions and Modern Relationships

• Applying Modern Verbal Deception Techniques to Modern Relationships: (1) Strategic Use of Evidence (SUE) Technique; (2) Assessment Criteria Indicative of Deception (ACID); (3) Verifiability Approach; (4) Cognitive Credibility Assessment (CCA) (Imposing Cognitive Load; Asking Unexpected Questions; Encouraging Interviewees to Say More) (Vrij, Leal, and Fisher, 2018).

• Identifying Lies in Modern Dating; Interpersonal Deception Theory (Buller and Burgoon, 1996); Positive Portrayals v. Deception (Ellison, Heino, and Gibbs, 2006); Identifying Lies in Modern Personal Relationships; Intimate Personal Relationships; Work Professional Relationships; Trust and Deception; Truth-Bias; Correlations with Intimacy Increases; Overestimating Ability to Detect Lies and Deception; the use of Objective Opinions.

• Identifying Lies in Familial Relationships (Shared History; Personal Bias); Lying Tendencies in Friends and Family Members (Mann et al., 2014).

• Modern Approaches to Detecting Lies (Asking Neutral Questions; Establishing Comfort Zones; Body Language; Micro-Facial Expressions; Speech Changes; Surveillance Activities; Behavioural (Lie) Journal; Separation of Emotion).

EXPERT TRAINER

Rodrigo Zepeda is Co-Founder and Managing Director of Storm-7 Consulting. He is an expert consultant who specialises in derivatives and banking and financial services law, regulation, and compliance.
