JAWAID FAROOQI
Jawaid Farooqi is Head of the Chambers of Waheed Farooqi & Co., a prestigious law firm based in Pakistan, that was established in 1954 by his father Professor Waheed Farooqi, who was one of the top six lawyers in Pakistan. Jawaid has practiced law for the past 27 years and has achieved outstanding prominence in the field of law. He has worked in almost every field of law, spanning areas such as Banking, Contract, Family, Labour, Service, Civil, Corporate, Partnership, Shipping, Customs, Constitutional, and Taxation. He enrolled as an Advocate of Sub-Ordinate Courts, Karachi, Pakistan in 1992, and as Advocate of the High Court of Sindh, Karachi, Pakistan in 1994. He has appeared in more than 4,500 legal cases disposed of by the High Court of Sindh, Karachi, with approximately 100 cases on separate taxation and legal issues, and nearly 1,500 cases on common taxation issues reported in prominent law journals of Pakistan. He was appointed Legal Advisor for the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) (Pakistan Tax Authority), Government of Pakistan, for 15 years as well as other Autonomous Bodies, Banks, Corporations and Business Houses. While representing the FBR in High Court, he appeared in high profile cases involving issues on International Taxation, interpretation of Avoidance of Double Taxation, and Fiscal Evasion Treatise involving taxation of non-resident companies, issues of Transfer Pricing, and Intellectual Property. He was appointed Deputy Attorney General (DAG) for the Government of Pakistan in July, 2012 and retired in June, 2013. Whilst DAG he appeared in several high profile and sensitive legal cases, and also represented the Government of Pakistan before the Supreme Court of Pakistan in renowned ‘Suo Moto’ case on the law and order situation in Karachi. In 2014 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Taxation Laws at Hamdard School of Law, Karachi, and in 2017 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Taxation Laws in Dadabhoy School of Law, Karachi. He is also President of the Pakistan Global Law Academy. Over the span of his career he has delivered a vast array of lectures and workshops on a broad range of legal topics, including delivery of a seminar on OECD requirements of AEOI Automatic Exchange of Account Information (Common Reporting Standard) (CRS) for Financial Institutions of Pakistan on 9th June 2018, and delivery of a training session on CRS for Stock Brokers Companies in liaison with the Pakistan Stock Brokers Association, Karachi on 13th August 2018.
